Google AI Mode

Google's full-page conversational answer surface — deeper sub-query fanout than AI Overview.

How it works

AI Mode is Google's full-page generative answer experience (rolled out 2025), where users get a chat-style synthesized answer with citation tiles rather than a SERP. Runs on Gemini. Uses deeper query fanout than AI Overview — decomposes the seed query into more sub-questions and surfaces ~5–12 citation tiles in a side panel. Often invoked for complex multi-part queries that SERPs can't easily answer. Distinct from AI Overview (inline-above-SERP); often available as a tab in search results.

Signals it weights heavily
  • Sub-query coverage
  • Topical authority (multiple pages on the same topic cluster)
  • Structural depth
  • JSON-LD schema
  • E-E-A-T
How to optimize for Google AI Mode
  • Cover sub-topics exhaustively on a single page — AI Mode's deeper fanout rewards mega-pages with H2-segmented sub-questions.
  • Internal linking matters more in AI Mode — it follows internal links to refine the answer.
  • Same surface signals as AI Overview (FAQ schema, BLUF, E-E-A-T), but with broader coverage requirements.
