Gemini (Google)
Google's frontier model with web search — distinct from AI Overview's SERP integration.
How it works
Gemini is Google's frontier model family (Pro, Flash, Ultra), available via gemini.google.com chat surface + API. When queries require fresh info, Gemini invokes Google Search internally. Retrieval uses Google's existing index. Citation behavior is similar to ChatGPT's web tool — inline citations with source previews. Gemini's strength: multimodal (image + video + audio understanding) and very long context (1M+ tokens), letting it ingest entire research papers or long-form content in one prompt.

Signals it weights heavily
- Long-form content (Gemini's huge context lets it read full pages)
- Multimodal content (alt-text, video transcripts)
- JSON-LD
- Authority signals
How to optimize for Gemini (Google)
- Don't truncate articles — Gemini can read 1M-token content; long-form pillar content gets fully ingested.
- Invest in video transcripts + image alt-text — Gemini reads multimodal signals.
- Long-form authority pieces (3K–10K words) perform better on Gemini than on Perplexity.
